It's in my job description to give people the bad news, but never did I think I would be relaying this information: Layla Miller passed away Tuesday afternoon in her apartment. Her son, Jamie, is currently in the care of Marisa Coulter, and our thoughts are with him. Any messages of condolences will be passed on, he's not taking any visitors at the moment.

Layla's funeral will be held next Tuesday. Marisa Coulter, Ayame Sadoku and Katherine Pryde are in charge of organising it - if you have any concerns, or if you wish to speak, take it up with one of them. Heads of the other branches will be arriving on Sunday, and they will be requiring escorts; I'm naming Valentine, LeBeau and Black for the duty, sort it out amongst yourselves who will be responsible for whom.

We have no reason so far to believe it was foul play, but a team will be put together for investigation. I have been appointed Bureau Director temporarily, before someone more suitable can be found, and my deputy will step up to lead the field agents in the meantime. I'm aware that this will be a difficult time for people, especially those who knew her well, but I'm asking you all to be professional - Layla Miller dedicated her life to this work, and I believe no one would want to see her efforts wasted.

I've already put a few feelers out among staff hackers in Bristol and Xi'An along with Alice Springs. Plus I sent out a feeler within the Underground (band of hackers, mutual aid kind of thing) and I noticed the Underground has been too quiet over the last week or so, calm before the storm? As for sources I've got plenty of contacts from my days as a freelance white hat hacker plus a professor back in England that was a mentor for me.

One oddball hunch: my dog gave me the saddest little woof right before news broke, did anyone else have an animal do this? If needed I can put out a filter later on to ask this if my hunch is valid.

Michael and I are in Tech, working together on info checks. Just let Ein sniff you if anyone checks in please (he's friendly)?

Don't know what half that means, but I'll start figuring out who she's talked to, if she's been anywhere specific, start checking for enemies, talking to people. I'm leaving Jamie alone, though, that kid's been through more than enough. So, I suggest everyone leave him alone, he's not ready.

I might check in later, but I'm going to start looking into some shit myself too. I'll share anything I find.

Tricky. No next of kin, no immediate family, no father, and odd circumstances surrounding his mother's death... The State is going to have a field day with this. We're going to have trouble with CPS. They'll want to put him in foster care and keep him as far away from any of this as possible.

There are a few questions that need to be answered before the Legal Department can look into this any furhter: How old is Jamie and what is the ideal outcome in this case? ~~With his best interests in mind~~ what do you want to see happen?

Exactly. In the interest of not letting the cat out of the bag as far as the Bureau itself goes, we may have to do a little improvising in order to ensure that we as an organization aren't outed to the public, even more so than we usually do if we want to make sure that Jamie stays under the protection of the BPRD and not in the foster care system. From what we've managed to dig up on child custody law in Connecticut, it looks like the final court decision will be riding on what the court decides is in Jamie's best interests, and there are more than a couple factors that end up coming into that one. I can send a copy of that article to you if it'd be helpful, Westley.

Either way, we'll have to work as fast as we possibly can without giving the state reason to find us suspicious. Jamie is by law supposed to be in foster care already, and when CPS finds out that his only legal guardian is gone, they're going to be at our door and barking up our collective ... yeah, anyway. Unless Mrs. Coulter has a pretty paper saying that she is a certified foster care provider (or unless we can somehow make one for her), this could end up being a serious problem.

Did anyone manage to look into whether or not Ms. Miller had any custody plans set up?

Do we have any connections in CPS that can help us with that? I would say she could do it legally but there's a whole nasty background investigation and inspection that goes along with it that we just can't have. Maybe we'd be better off contacting one of our hackers.

Additionally, the court seems open to putting him in the care of a non-biological guardian. I know it's not as easy as it sounds but if we could just produce evidence that will convince the court that we ~~Mrs. Coulter~~ one of us is well enough to look after Jamie, then I think we have an ace on this situation.

And I just want to say that although this is going to be a long battle but I think we should fight this for Jamie and I really want to do this for Jamie and Mrs. Miller. I think it would disappoint her if we don't do this right after all she's done for us.

Long battle or not, nothing is impossible. Doing this right would require not being sloppy about it, though, so let's try to avoid it, shall we?

At some point, we need to come up with a strategy -- preferably sooner rather than later. There's an entire laundry list of factors coming into this case that could either make it or break it, gentlemen, and we need to consider all of them. The one thing I'm finding myself a bit preoccupied with is, again, how exactly we're going to present our case with as much honesty as possible without blowing the BPRD's cover, because that would be bad for the organization and for Jamie.
